Samling Global to contest Penan land claims

HONG KONG. Timber giant Samling Global (HK 3938) has yesterday acknowledged that five Penan communities (Long Pakan, Long Lilim, Ba Abang, Long Kawi and Long Item) have filed collective action suits against the company. In an official stock exchange announcement, Samling informs the public that writs of summons have been served on two of its Malaysian subsidiaries, Samling Plywood (Lawas) Sdn Bhd, and Samling Reforestation (Bintulu) on 15 December 2009.
Samling Global said that the timber licence and the licence for planted forest held by its two subsidiaries "have been issued by governmental authorities in Sarawak" and announced that the company "will contest the legal suits brought against Samling Plywood and Samling Reforestation."
